I really enjoyed this book and can't say enough about it. A story of two women connected in life as close as any blood relatives could be. I was very impressed with this author. The story moves along through the good and bad pages of life. One in love with a dangerous man. How one woman sacrifices everything to care for the other. Overcoming overwhelming odds and coming together in an amazing ending too good to pass up. Courtroom drama at its best. This book shows the good, the bad, and the truly ugly and how it doesn't have to define your life to the bitter end. One so beautiful and one rather plain but beautiful in so many ways you can't really say which one is which. Lies and truth combined for survival will keep you reading this one to the amazing end. No disappointments in this book.Product details

I like how the author portrays the idea that despite the differences in color or race, people can have very deep connections that bind them wether they like it or not. The book also brought out the idea that there can be strong loyalty among friends, especially if they bonded around common circumstances even if their goals in life are different. There are many life lessons to this book. I also like the suspense that never gave away the villan until the last moment.
I picked this book out and was unsure of what it was all about. It started off slow and then after I figured out who was who and what the time period we were dealing in, I was hooked. One of the best books I have ever read. It does jump a little from one time period to another, but becomes easy to figure that out as you go along. I felt like I knew the characters so well it was like I knew them in real life. Very interesting and the one small mystery at the end, was totally unexpected. I highly recommend this book. Very well written.
This was a good book to read. The author was very creative in this book. I like the storyline.. crazy book though. A few spelling errors and etc. Overall, it was a good book. Could have had a better ending . Angela was a bad seed that's for sure. Get the book and read it. You won't put it down at all. I didn't. Deborah Kennedy, I wanted to ask you ..were this really a story about your life in Chicago , ILL.... The story was so real... and true.. it was almost like an autobiography. if I missed it forgive me. But, I enjoyed the reading. SAD story ,, but it needed to be told... GOOD BOOK, buy it !!!
This book is set in an era that race was a much bigger problem than it is now. The problems faced by the young girls as they went on their way was the same for the both of them. Ruby was strong enough to take care of Freddie and the children, Freddie was smart enough to make sure they would be taken care of the rest of their lives. I would recommend this book to anyone, I read the book in two days, she keeps you interested. I have never read any of her books before, but I will be looking for more.
At the beginning of this book I thought the book was about Freddie Walker and her children, however, by the end, the story proved to be about a true love between two friends (women), a love for the children involved and a true testament of what a real friend is all about. Ruby Johnson became an inspiration as I turned the pages and made me examine how I could be a better friend to at least 1 person in my life. Ruby is a demonstration of "unconditional agape" love. Love prevails all even against some of the most evil circumstances, situations and many times people who are evil. A great story line!
A brief synopsis two young girls fending for themselves in a dangerous city, they are bound to fall under the "protection" of someone bad. Ruby and Freddie manage to thrive even though Freddie becomes a prostitute with four children. Then something bad happens and they both pay the price for something out of their control.
Premise Good Character Development Fabulous, on every level. Editing Very good, a few mistakes but in the world of self publishing with no editor very minor.
I normally have books endings figured out by the end of chapter one. This book managed to surprise me right to the end. I got this as a free download but it would be worth purchasing.
The life of Freddie Walker was one of ugliness, neglect, incest and abuse. When the opportunity to get away from that life presented itself and she was so cavalier about it, I was mad. She was set to leave her pimp, take her kids and start a real life, but she didn't see the very real danger that Jimmy Tate might have another plan in mind for her. I wanted the story to have a better outcome, but it is written so well that I couldn't put it down. Written so that you see the middle part of the story first, the violence and the hope; then the beginning that starts to make sense of why things happened the way they did and then the ending which I didn't see that last twist coming. The story really felt real and the characters felt like people I cared about who were scarred by life's events.
