Gleaning stories and adventures from journals that she kept since December, 1985, IN THIS PLACE is autobiographical and concentrates mainly on their first four years in Liberia. She is working on completing her second book, IN EVERY PLACE, which continues the Abernethy's missionary adventures from 1990 - 2002.
IN EVERY PLACE is expected to be published in early spring 2012.

Love for the lost was what I got while reading the two books written by Kim. The colorful sketches and detailing was phenomenal. I was there with them and loving every thrilling moment which lasted a full four days for me. My husband hardly got a word from me during the time reading her books. Loving Africa as I do and having read nearly every missionary book possible, these two were better than most. Kim's style delivers. From chapter to chapter, their experiences were leaving me begging for more. It was difficult at times to really grasp what the family was actually being asked to endure for their Lord. I wept many times, chuckled often but mostly just read with my eyes wide open, totally amazed. Her books could have been six hundred pages long and I would have been delighted. When they ended, I was sad and felt like I had said good-bye to my dearest sister and friend. I couldn't buy the second one fast enough called In Every Place.I highly recommend these two books because I grew spiritually while immersed in the African culture and their wonderful, fun loving family of five. Kim shared a lot of great quotes and some wonderful Bible verses too. A follow-up book about their college ministry would be something I would love to read. Hope to see it come to Amazon. Thank you a million plus a million times Kim and I look forward to a big hug in heaven as we spend a few thousand plus years sharing our love for our Precious Lord. He is Good all the time!

I am a missionary wife myself and have always enjoyed reading other missionaries stories. This book was a real encouragement to me as I read of how God used this couple to bring so many souls to Him and of how He led and protected them any their children time and again.
This book was a very enjoyable read. Lots of interesting stories plus a down to earth perspective on how fellow missionaries may look at cultural immersion. I like how Kim detailed other missionary choices compared to her reasoning and the struggle to keep a balance in cultural differences with the Liberian people.
Kim's books are amazing!!! She does a fantastic job of being completely transparent and opening her heart up to show the struggles and challenges she faced. It's extremely important for Christian missionaries to show the truth of their struggles to encourage other Christians struggling in their callings. I highly recommend this book to all Christians, especially those interested in missionary work!
In her book, In This Place, Kim Abernethy lays aside the cookie-cutter used for most missions biographies. Instead, her transparency serves as a picture window illuminating the heart of the cross-cultural missionary. Each chapter reveals the joys and struggles of missionary life which seem to collide constantly in the lives of those battling in a distant, though eternally significant battleground. In This Place respectfully takes missionaries off the untouchable pedestal and places them in the midst of reality where every Christian battles the lies of the Deceiver and where God's grace abounds. Reading this book can better equip any missions-minded Christian to be able to pray more effectually -- and will stir them to pray more fervently - for missionaries. It will enlighten the Western Christian to the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges faced by the cross-cultural missionary and will enable the reader to "rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep."
As a missionary currently living in West Africa I could SO relate to nearly every aspect of this book. The day to day clashes of culture and tales of daily living in a third world country were so relatable. I really enjoyed the book. It was well paced and very interesting. I took off a star for some grammatical issues and editing issues. But as far as content goes, I highly recommend this book. A wonderful read!
Very interesting and informative! Abernethy is frank and sincere about the ups and downs of missionary life. I know I would like her if I knew her personally. It was good for me to learn about Liberia , a country I knew nothing about. I read this and could not wait to read the next one.
This book is very enjoyable to read, and I would heartily recommend it to missionaries, or anyone planning to live cross-culturally. Mrs. Abernathy is transparent about her struggles, and the truths God used to help her over come them. We are teaching through this book to our pre teen class who has no clue about any culture other than their own. We love it and they are having their eyes opened.
